When to book
Most women book their first visit once a home pregnancy test is positive, with many first appointments around 6 to 8 weeks of pregnancy.
What to bring
- Your identification
- Any previous medical records or scan reports
- A list of medicines and supplements you take
- Your questions
Your partner is welcome to come too.
What happens at the visit
Dr Dharsh will ask about your health, your periods, any previous pregnancies and your family history. Your blood pressure, weight and urine are checked.
An ultrasound scan confirms that the pregnancy is in the womb, checks the heartbeat, estimates your due date and shows how many babies there are.
Routine blood tests usually include your blood group, a full blood count, screening for thalassaemia, and screening for infections such as hepatitis B, HIV and syphilis, as well as checking your immunity to rubella. You will also hear about the screening tests available for chromosomal conditions, so you can decide what is right for you.
Supplements and everyday advice
- Folic acid is recommended from before conception until 12 weeks of pregnancy.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking.
- Check any medicines with your doctor before taking them.
- Gentle, regular exercise is usually encouraged.
What comes next
Visits continue throughout your pregnancy and become more frequent towards the end. Along the way you can expect a detailed scan at around 20 weeks and a check for gestational diabetes, usually between 24 and 28 weeks. Your birth preferences are discussed as your pregnancy progresses.
